Spreading the Love Around...

Since we have had a mild winter here in Chicago, some of my heavier pieces in my wardrobe have been feeling jealous...neglected. But, as it is pretty cold here today, I decided to show those pieces some love!

For instance...this fur collared sweater vest. The few times I have styled this vest it has been over a button up shirt. Today, I wanted to try something different...

I wasn't 100% sure how this outfit was going to turn out. I had the vest and the turtle neck one, and had no idea what to wear on the bottom. So, I decided this springy skirt might juxtapose the fur sweater vest. Before I could change my mind, Alex started screaming because he could not find his shoes and Jack was screaming because Alex was screaming...so I grabbed some jewelry...found Alex's shoes and ran out the door...boys in tow!

From the file of a working mom's guilt...

When I got home last night from work then the gym (must sweat out frustrations), I announced that I was home and no one came up from the basement to greet me. So, I clomped down the stairs and I noticed that Alex had this red ring around his mouth, like a fruit juice mustache, but more on the bottom lip than the top. After wondering what he had gotten into, since he doesn't drink red juice and I had hid the markers, I hurried him up stairs, against his will so I could scrub his face clean. After much after much struggling and scrubbing, the red mustache was still there. I gave up and it was bed time.
Much to Alex's frustration, I scrubbed his face again this morning trying to get him clean...no such luck...he was pretty annoyed from all the face touching! At school drop off, I noticed a few kids also had the same red face epidemic, so I mentioned it to his teacher... She proceeds to inform me that in the dry weather the kids lick their lips and around their lips a lot and it tends to get chapped...

The moral of the story...the insistent scrubbing just made it worse...poor Alex is now miserable and I assumed he was just dirty!

So, I picked up this thick blue infinity scarf along with the sunglasses at Nordstrom's the other day...had a small gift card burning a whole in my pocket. Infinity scarves are wonderful...they are like a giant necklace that keeps you warm...The boys saw the scarf last night and proceeded to drag it around the floor saying it was Big Blue the snake then they wrapped around both of their necks at the same time and ran around screaming it was attacking them...ha!

Wonderful, it is snowing here today in Chicago...my drive home with Alex should be painfully long and slow...

I am not sure how I feel about this sweater...besides the fact it is a bit itchy, it makes me look busty...and I really don't need that help. These oxfords are a favorite of mine...they make me feel like a kid again...carefree life, with endless possibilities...ok back to adulthood!

Too cold to go outside. But cold is a relative term these days. When it is 45 degrees in Chicago in the winter, 31 degrees just seems way too cold.

Dress-Made to Measure/Boots-LOFT/Jewelry-Macy's, gift from boys

After Alex was born, 3 years ago, I bought this dress and wore it a ton. But somehow, it got relegated to the back of my closet...not to be found again until I stumbled upon it while cleaning the closet a few weeks ago. When I used to wear it, I never thought of belting it, but since entering the world of fashion blogging, I have learned to embrace the world of the belt. Since this dress is purple, ruffly and girly, I tried to de-frill-ify the dress by cinching it with a chunky belt and hammered silver bracelet. My boys bought me this bracelet for Valentine's Day...Alex picked it out and could not wait to give it to me...
love it!!

Two other things that I love...

I stopped by the Clinique counter at Macy's last week, just looking for a replacement tube of my old standby Black Honey. But, I am never one to pass a gift-with-purchase, I picked up this tube of Plum Nude. This color works perfectly for me...perfect plumy pink shade...not to dark...slightly sheer...

Love me Vitamin Water Zero!! I must drink about three a day. Drinking perfection...multiple great flavors...no added sugar...2 grams carbs...toms of helpful vitamins. I can delude myself that at least while drinking I am doing something good for my body...multitasking...kind of!

I was right...the crappy feeling I had Friday developed into a full blown weekend of the sickies. Spent most of the weekend on the couch in my comfy clothes napping and watching tv. The sinus congestion that was ailing me over the weekend has now drained into my nose and throat...so I am still feeling pretty icky.
So, off to bed!!

Open My Eyes...I See You...

I spent the last two days taking pictures of kids for a brochure and website. I almost forgot how frustrating it can be taking candid of kids. The little ones like to make faces at the camera...the bigger ones are always running around. But, with all that said, I thing it went really well and I got a lot of great shots...if I do say so myself!

Since I knew I was going to be running around and getting up and down off the floor a lot, I knew I had to wear something comfortable, but since it was a religious school, it had to be "appropriate"

This outfit totally perfectly for the long day I had. Stopped by the Gap on the way home Wednesday and picked up these pants...love them. Not jeans, but not quite dress pants...skinny and stretchy!! I paired them with a flowy top to offset the skinniness.

I finished up the photo shoot today to cover the Shabbat festivities at the school. I knew that I had to go back to the office in the afternoon, so I went with a comfortable skirt. I just hopped I didn't flash any of the kiddos getting up off the floor...ha!

I am in a good mood today...not sure why...I am not questioning it, just going with it!

I took a walk to the lake on my way to lunch today. I thought the partial shadows of the trees would make a great backdrop for today's photos.

I was not really a fan of this outfit when I left the house. I threw it together when it realized that school started in 10 minutes and Jack was standing by the door, with his coat on, ready to go. Another one of my summer dresses that I wanted to style for winter, so I layered it with one of my favorite sparkly cardigans and a fun clock necklace.

Just because I love you all so much, here is what I wore yesterday!

Just a basic outfit than I tried to make a little less basic by adding a lace skirt and a ruffly cardigan.

I have another photography job tomorrow...I am a bit nervous. I am shooting photos for a brochure and website for a group of preschools. Also, I am not sure what to wear for a day of photographing kids...

I think a skirt might be too awkward getting up and down from the floor with the kids. Also, I am not sure if jeans are too casual...

What a dilemma...have any suggestions?

I recently have been have been steering towards black, white and shades of grey and neutrals lately. Maybe this pallete is a sign that I am growing up, I feel more sophisticated in neutrals...but, it is more likely a sign that lately I have felt like blending in lately...slightly insecure... What ever the reason, I am liking the feel of the black and white right now.

On the headache front...today was lets see if Randi's eyes are the cause of her misery. Had to have my eyes dialated...so not fun. Note to self...don't get them dialated at the beginning of the day...driving is not easy and typing at work is near impossible! The eyes themselves are fine, now they think the headaches are caused by the fit if my contacts...off to the specialist for that...wonderful! Looks like I will be sports my specs for a bit...

Wow...Rachael Jay from Suburban Style Challenge gave me a Versatile Blogger Award...very cool! With the award, I am supposed to share stuff about me. So, seven things about me you might not know...hmmmm...I normally share a lot, so I am going to have to dig deep...

-I spent the first year out of college working in Casper Wyoming...the middle of nowhere...There was a deer that like to hang out in our back yard!

-I had blond hair...but only for about a week. I just could not do it. I looked in the mirror and did not recognize myself...plus I hate the seeing dark roots...too much maintenance!

-When I go to cubs games I have to keep score. I started to do it as a child so I could focus on the game.

-I love Jack Daniels...but have not had a drink in about a year and a half...issues abound...

-I say I am a shy person...but recently, I have realized that I am really not...sometimes I just never shut up!

-The other night I told my kids it was nine o'clock, bedtime, so they would go to bed...really it was 7:30, I was home alone and I had lost my patience for their wildness...bad mom!!

-I loosened the reigns on my diet last night and had a lot of pizza...I fell like such a slug today...don't tell my trainer!

This is one of my favorite summer dresses from Target, but I wanted to wear it now...in the cold weather of winter. So, I decided to throw on a chunky sweater and tights. But, the highlight of my outfit is the wedges, I ordered them from Old Navy recently...super-duper sale and have been at a loss for how to style them. I think I achieved the look I was going for, pairing them with this dress and sweater. Despite the 3 inch wedges, they are really comfy...I love feeling tall!!

I usually wear this skirt with tops in in all shades of brown or black. But, during my weekend spree at Old Navy, I picked up this cardigan in this wonderful shad of blue. I figured that even though the pattern on this skirt is loud, I would treat it as a neutral and use my new cardigan as a topper. I love how this outfit turned out...the blue just ads a great punch!

By the way...the boys behavior was less than stellar last night... The hubs will be home in three days...THANK YOU!!!

Ghosts of Decades Past...

Hope everyone had a good weekend!!
We got a large dumping of snow here Friday afternoon and evening, so I Alex and I spent the night at my parents...no need to spend multiple hours driving home in the blowing snow with a 3 year old in the back seat...torture!! The rest of the weekend consisted of grocery shopping, sweating it out at the gym, a kids birthday party and watching what turned out to be two exciting football games!

Glad this outfit is pretty simple and I laid it out before bed last night...I made the nutty mistake of sleeping an extra half an hour this morning so I could make an effort at starting off this long week with some extra energy... That so did not work, not only was I still tired, I then had to rush even more than usual to get the boys dressed and out of the house...good thing for coffee.

I am loving Old Navy lately...I go through phases when I rarely shop there, but then there are times like now, when I love all they have got going on. Now that the boobs are smaller, I love wearing sweaters, and they seem to have a ton of cute ones right now...such fun stripes, I love brown and pink together!!

Jack and Alex told me they promise to behave while mom is home alone this week...sure...

I was freezing when I woke up yesterday, so this outfit is the final product of a layering attempt going boring. I started with the thin turtleneck...I tried a denim shirt, chunky cardigan, lace cardigan...ended up with this blazer I never remember buying... By the time I found this random toppper, it was getting late, so I grabbed my boots and ran out of the house...without a necklace. I felt so naked all day without something shiny to adorn my neck.

It was a balmy 8 degrees when I woke up this morning. When it hits single digits, I stop freezing my butt off to take photos outside and take outfit photos in the crappy light of my office...

This was an attempt at layering for warmth gone sloppy... I should have worn a fitted/slim skirt to balance out the bulkiness of the cardigan, but this skirt is just too comfy. It is Friday, I am cold, tired and have a headache...so comfy won!

I am definitely glad it is Friday, but Sunday begins my week of just me and my two little munchkins...

I need more coffee just thinking about all the running around I have to do...

I cannot do it all...I cannot be super women...Admitting it is the first step...right?

I am freaking out about the hubs going out of town next week. Me...two little boys...alone...all week!
I am getting tired just thinking about it!

I don't worry about fat or calories when eating pizza or Mexican. They are the only two foods I don't obsess over calories, carbs, sugar. Mmm...guacamole.

I miss peanut butter...discovered it is a headache trigger...so no more peanut butter...

I am 35 and am not where I expected to be in my career...I am learning it's all about tempering your expectations and being happy.

I am pathetically happy about my first photo credit...Today booked another photography job...yahoo!!

Pardon the wrinkles...

I picked up this skirt last week at Target while I was "supposed" to be grocery shopping....I did manage to get the groceries too. I love a good key motif, so I could just now pass it up. It is definitely a spring/summer item, so I tried to make it winter appropriate with the sweater and tights. I can also see styling it with a denim shirt and even a blazer for a meeting. This necklace is also a target find...loud and chunky...perfect for dressing up a plain sweater...amongst other things.

Had a pretty relaxing weekend. I did not do much besides go to the gym, watch football, grocery shop and most importantly relax. I am trying to get better with that last one, but it is not so easy!

I don't mind the snow at all...it is this schizophrenic weather that has gotten to me...
This is winter...I expect the 20 and 30 degree temps, snow, ice, bad traffic...bring it on!! I am just not a fan of the unexpected. Winter means dressing in layers, bundling up the kids, scraping ice of the car...

In case you were curious...I know you are...
I went to the doctor for the headaches. It was getting to a point where about 4 or 5 days of the week were spent with mind numbingly bad headaches...rendering me useless. The doctor was not sure what was triggering them, so I have to go to an Opthamologist and get a CAT scan...wonderful!! Also, my migraines might be triggered by certain types of food...I have already eliminated sugar...now no more nuts and certain cheeses. I am already a picky vegetarian...soon there will be nothing left to eat!! But, I will do anything to rid myself of the constant pounding go on in my head!!

The thermometer said 45 degrees...that says nothing about the wind... When people say it is cooler and windier along the lake...they are definitely not kidding!

I found this great place to take photos about a mile from my office, right along the lake. I am definitely going to frequent this spot...once the wind decides to stop blowing my tripod over...I had to pick it up five time before I could start shooting!!

I never thought I would love a polka dot sweater...but I do. I stopped by Old Navy Sunday and picked up a few things at their sale...this sweater was $10...steal! They had some of their spring stuff out...I fell in love with a striped cotton dress...I am going to have to pick it up the next time I have a coupon.

I have got some great ideas on how to style up this sweater...next time I am thinking paired with my black lace skirt...I have been loving the black and blue color combo lately!

All Around Me Are Familiar Faces...

While attempting to organize my closet, I noticed that I have a lot of pieces from LOFT. Also, looking through my outfit photos from the last few weeks, I have realized that there are many days when I am clothed from head to toe in LOFT. The more I think about it, the more I realize I really love that store...their clothes perfectly fit my lifestyle. Casual pieces for weekends and days off...jeans, sweaters, shirts. LOFT's clothes are also perfect for my work wardrobe...helping me dress sophisticated but still stylish. Probably my favorite thing about them is their clothes are cut for a women's body. I have curves, boobs...I am not built like a teenage and their clothes embrace that. Also, the fact that they have great sales and coupons helps my budget immensely...

Both of these outfits were worn within the last two weeks...all LOFT all the time!

For a 4 day week, this week has seedm awfully long.

Nothing like a comfy Target dress to make a exhausted Friday more bearable!

The weather in Chicago is so wacky...it is currently 54 degrees...in January. Normally, I would be wearing this dress with a denim shirt and/or a cardigan. But, it was just so nice out when I woke up, I decided to embrace global warming and go just the dress. I had on my favorite brown suede ankle boots on the school run this morning...then I slipped in the parking lot, like the dorky mom I am...and skinned my knee, bloody hole in my tights, scuffed up booties and bruised ego. So, I ran home to change my tights and threw on flat boots...less of a chance I will bite the dust again in these! Alex was there when I hit the ground...he ran up and asked my if I wanted him to kiss it...I melted... To bad that kiss did not take away the current throbbing, purple lump I now have on my knee.

I am off to embrace the weekend...and maybe a nap or two...

Baseball Nerd Alert!

Not sure if everyone knows this about me...I am a huge sports fan, especially baseball. I love reading about it, watching it and debating it...stats and all! Diehard Cubs fan here! My father took me out of school to go to every opening day at Wrigley Field since I was a kid until college.When I was little, I used to say that I wanted to be the first female Major League baseball player...ha!

Since a client of mine advertises on WGN Cubs radio, I was invited to a remote broadcast with Theo Epstein President of Baseball Operations for the Chicago Cubs. As a forever Cubs fan, it is great to have someone in charge of the team that is a baseball guy, but also a numbers and stats guy. He wants to build for the future, not just a quick fix...

Since I was going to meet the controller of the future of baseball in Chicago...I spent way to much time trying to decide what to wear. I wanted to look classy, do I went with the basic black dress. The the delimma was what to wear on top, since it was about 25 degrees when I left the house... I decided to ad this print sweater grey tights and my favorite black boots. I figured that the casual sweater over the dress, was very me...classy with a fun, laid back twist...

Happy New Year's...

I don't make new year's resolutions. I decided about 10 years ago, after spending way too many new years eve's crappy, lonely, drunk, angry, that new year's was just going to signify a turn of the calendar...writing a new date on checks... I resigned myself to try to live each day the fullest...enjoy what I have and not dwell on what I don't. I freely admit I have strayed from my goals...a lot...but I try to stay happy and positive, but it is not easy!
So, here's too each day...

The big excitement around here was that we had a babysitter for new years. So, the hubs and I went out for sinner and a movie with some friends. I probably would have enjoyed Mission Impossible III more if I had not gotten a migraine half way through and and decided to suffer in silence.

I tend to be the dressiest one in our group of friends...always wearing skirts and dresses for casual nights out...I always feel more comfortable in a skirt and would rather be overdressed. But, then I realized that it wasn't me...so I went back to my dressy ways and styled the fun velvet striped shirt with my favorite denim skirt...I am better when I am myself...

I also had on blue earrings when I left the house, then found these red ones on my desk at work, so I thought I would throw them on for some added color. The only color, besides blue, I intentionally put on while getting dressed was the green scarf...that was only because I was cold!

The End Is Near...What I Wear...

Unlike most, I am exstatic that the holiday season is half way over...too many fattening dinners, too many presents to buy...money spent, kids without school to occupy their days, daily routines all out of whack! Don't get me wrong, I love the extra family time, but so much to do and I still have to go to work every day...

So, Christmas vacation for the boys means I had to take them to work with me today...no vacation for me...what a crazy day it was. My office is now a giant mess and I work-wise I was useless. But, I did get dressed!

I picked up this cardigan last week at a sale at JCrew. I love the camel and black combo with the classic retro vibe. I see this cardigan becoming a frequent flyer in my wardrobe. I can envision it layered over denim...topping trousers...maybe thrown over a floral dress when the weather warms up.

Give me a good dress, cardigan and a pile of shiny things and I am set! This cardigan is one of my favorites...the ruffles provide a step up from the basic black cardigan.

Yes...I did get a haircut. I had thought about going a lot shorter and redder... In the end, the familiar won.
I covered the grey and multiple shades of brown and red...the bottom layers were cut about an inch, while top top layers were just trimmed so maybe soon they will meet somewhere in the middle. Also, growing the bangs out...decision made!

So, I rolled down the sleeves and threw on a denim pencil skirt, tights, a cargo jacket for the chill in my office and my brogues. Speaking of brogues, besides the fact that they are comfy, I love the feeling and memories they evoke. Whenever I put them on I feel like a little girl...when I was fearless...had my whole life ahead of me...no decisions already made... Plus, there was a boy...he wore brogues...I had a crush...

Back to reality...there is a messy little boy next to me who needs a bath, story and bed!

This month everybody over at Everybody, Everywhere are showcasing their sequins and sparkles. I had forgotten about the theme until yesterday. I assumed that I had something sequined in my wardrobe...but, searching through my closet last night I realized I was wrong. So, I decided to go with my sparkly gold sweater. It might be hard to tell, but the cardigan knit has is made up of gold threads... I think that qualifies as sequins and sparkles... Lately instead of always relaying on a plain black skirt as my wardrobe staple, I have been reaching for this lace skirt instead....I think it ads something extra to a basic outfit.

A Swap and A Cake Pop...

Friday was ModlyChic's School House Swap. I had never been to a swap before so I had no idea what to expect...I had a great time meeting and talking with other Chicago bloggers and I came away with a cool belt and a tweed skirt!

The boys and I spent Saturday at my parents house. The boys slept over so I could go out Friday night...thank you mom and dad!

On Saturday, we attempted to make cake pops. I emphasize the word attempted because I could not figure out how to coat them in the glaze my dipping, so I had to use my hands to spread the icing. We also had quite a hard, but fun, time getting the pops to stay on the sticks.

By the end, not only were the pops covered in glaze and sprinkles...so was I.

All in all, we had a great time and the cake pops were delicious.

"I am cold"...first thing I said this morning when I woke up....this is the thought I based my whole outfit and day around. Our bedroom is an attic room above a non-insulated porch which makes it about 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the house...so I layered...with faux fur. My favorite denim shirt and this fantastically warm sweater vest and cordory skirt...layered bracelets, shiny necklace, earrings and I was ready to go...all warm and toasty.

I was so darn windy here today in Chicago. My office is right on the lake and the wind was so strong I could barely walk across the street. While I was sitting in my car in the parking lot, procrastinating going into the office, I heard a loud noise and felt the car shake...I thought someone had hit my car, but it was just a really strong gust of wind...scared the crap out of me!!

So, looking at these photos, I think the sweater might be a bit too bulky...oh, well...I tried...

Since the sweater was slouchy with the wide neck, I tried to de-80's-ify the outfit with my oxfords.

Since I hate crowds, I did not participate in Black Friday. But Friday night, an hour before closing, me and my mom did hit up the outlet mall for a few things. The crowds had died down but the sales were still great. At Coach, I purchased little wristlets for my sons teachers, and the above blue bag for me...love the mix of textures and the fun color. Right now I am in a phase when I like to carry around only the necessities in a smaller bag that I can wear on my shoulder or cross-body. With all the running around I have been doing, a smaller bag just make things easier. The only other purchases I made was at Jcrew outlet. Just a plaid button down, two tank tops, and a leopard iphone cover. I know I was on a spending freeze, but I received some holiday money that I decided to spend on myself. I also plan to spend some more on a few Cyber Monday sales.

I am so obsessed with these new booties...they are comfy and cute! I love them with skirts and dresses, but I also wore them with skinny jeans this weekend and they were perfect. This skirt is also so perfect because the pattern consists of both black and shades of brown, so I can style it with so many things. Tuesday's combo of the black tights, brown booties, black tank, and yellowish, brownish cardi work so well together. This cardi is kind of different...the zipper goes all the way around...up the front and around the collar...

This cough/cold that has invaded my body is now taking up permanent residence and I want to evict it!!

I am determined to keep trying this layering thing. Maybe it is because I have no desire to start wearing my heavy winter coat again...so I throw on another layer that I can then take of when I start sweating like usual. This outfit was styled around my new fuzzy vest from Ideelli. As soon as it arrived, I knew I wanted to wear it with one of my favorite flowey dress. Then, since the dress sleeves are elbow length, I decided the denim shirt could serve as another layer under the vest to keep me warm. I have seen the layers over a dress look in so many magazines and catalogs and thought if they can do it, I can look cool in my layers too!

I bought this dress on super sale at Macy's a few weeks ago. While planning my outfit Wednesday night, I decided on this sweater dress for Thursday. Then, I tried it on and realized I had one problem...it was short sleeved... Problem solved...I decided to layer under with a thin turtleneck. I have always been a fan of turtlenecks...not sure why! Love the color peeking out from the sleeves and neckline. But, about halfway though the day, I caught a glimpse of my backside in the mirror and realized that this dress is a bit short...so maybe next time I will ad another layer...leggings!

Reality...this is my standard work wear...nothing real earth shattering, but I try to be real. I hate to admit this, but I went through my closet last night, I realized there is not much I "need" for my fall and winter wardrobe. I am still on the hunt for a camel pencil skirt, black cardigan and a white button up shirt...I think I am pretty good besides that. Since my clothing budget is not what it used to be, I think unnecessary and mindless clothes shopping will be coming to a halt...never thought I would say that. I have no rules, but I am tightening the purse strings for awhile...unless I "need" it, it stays at the store!

I have a meeting tonight at Jack's school to talk about the reading program. For some reason, I always feel like an impostor at those meetings. Like I am playing dress up and pretending to fit in...it is sort of an out of body experience...

Barney Has Got Nothing On Me!

Every time I look down at my legs all I can think of is Barney. For those of you without kids, he is a large purple dinosaur with way too many under aged friends who like to sing about loving and hugging you... I guess I just find him creepy. Thank god my kids weren't into him for very long...I could barely keep a straight face when he started singing!

So, in preparation for this Everybody, Everywhere, I dug through my enormous mound of tights in my closet and only could find black, multiple shades of brown and gray...not very colorful. So, I popped into the Gap on my way last night and picked up these purple ones. With my $10 rewards, they were only $2... I put an outfit together around them together last night but, it looks nothing like the outfit I currently have on. I tried them with a patterned skirt and blazer, but I felt the loud color was too much with the pattern. So, I opted to go with this neutral denim shirt dress I found in the back of my closet. I was planning to wear black wedge booties, but since there is a monsoon going on outside right now... rain boots it is!

I Have never really been into faux fun, but I think this vest has changed my mind...so comfy and warm.

I tend to dress around a general theme each season and I have found my muse for this fall...Vests layered with shirts...never thought I would love that look, especially on me...but I have fallen in love!

I think I am so excited by it because I can actually wear button up shirts...woo hoo. I just ordered two vests...I cannot wait until they arrive so I can style them up! I am thinking button up shirts, turtle necks, dresses..the possibilities are endless...

My Umbrella Blew Away...

It is cold, rainy and disturbingly windy outside today....hence outfit photos taken in the lobby of my office. I hate taking photos inside, especially in my building. The is annoying patterned carpet everywhere and the lighting is so poor, little sconces dot the walls. But, I liked my outfit today, so I had to take photos. I don't want to waste my outfit on just a client! Instead of wearing a solid skirt with this shirt, I thought I would try to pattern combo with this lace skirt. The skirt is one of my favorites...comfy elastic waist, fully lined but only slightly transparent.

I have not gotten to the gym this week and my body is starting to get mad at me...sugar headaches, tight clothes...maybe if i would make it home from work and pick up before 8PM...ahhhhhh!!

At least tomorrow is Friday...right?

I am very proud of myself...I only had three pieces of Halloween candy...which I stole from the boys when they were not looking. On the other hand, Alex, who dressed as a fireman, was eating candy up until he climbed in the bed...bad mom!

I was so worried about how Jack would react to having to go to Kindercare after school for a few hours...but, he is so excited. He keeps asking me "how many days until I go to Kindercare on the bus after school...I cannot wait." Alex had his first day at the new school yesterday. He clung to me like velcro for about 5 minutes. Then when I said I had to go, he kept asking me for hugs...after about five with the death grip, he let me go. In the end, he had a great day!

So, I guess I can take a deep breath now...

The Story Of Why I Love my Boobs!

Since tomorrow is the last day of October, breast cancer awareness month, I thought I would tell my story of how breast cancer changed my life. It began in 2000 when my mom was first diagnosed with breast cancer. Nothing but the birth of my children affected me more than seeing one of the people who had taken care of me my whole life so devastated, crying to her mom. She was just so amazing through out everything, so strong... Three years, multiple surgeries and one recurrence later, a doctor recommended genetic testing for the gene mutation for breast cancer. Once it was established that I had the BRCA 1 genetic mutation..meaning I had a 50% to 80% chance of getting breast cancer...many options were discussed but I never thought a prophylactic mastectomy be in my future.
But, after having kids, I decided that I did not want to live with such a high risk of getting cancer...the possibility of one day not being there for my kids. At first I decided that I would have the prophylactic mastectomy when I was 35. Since that was a year or so in the future, I didn't think about the details or ramifications of such a radical surgery. But, spring 2010, I just decided it was time. After first talking a the plastic surgeon and getting the exact details of the surgery and seeing the "after" photos, I almost let my fear get the best of me. So, August 28, 2010 I had the first of 5 surgeries.

Ok, so a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy...the quick general information...not to go into all the details... 14 hour surgery where the go in and remove all the breast tissue. Then, they proceed to do a total reconstruction of the chest. Then, since I did not want implants, they used the fat from my stomach for the reconstruction. It is done in the form of a tummy tuck and an incision from hip to hip.
After about a week in the hospital, 2 severe infections, and 5 more surgeries over the next 6 months here I sit with a 1% chance of getting breast cancer...less than the average person on the street.

Sometimes, I think is a good thing they don't explain all the specific details, especially the recovery, because if I had know how hard it was going to be, I might have had second thoughts. I have a scar from hip to hip that got infected and has been reopened multiple times...hopefully closed for business! I have no feeling around most of the incision and my reconstructed belly button with a hard lump of scar tissue protruding from the left side of my belly. A wonderful side effect of the surgery are the smaller boobs you see clothed on this blog. They had always been way to big for my frame, got in the way for everything, made dressing difficult and generally a pain. You know your boobs are huge when the plastic surgeon gasps when you tell him your bra size. Now, my boobs might be covered in scars, still sore but numb in most spots and no nipples (sorry if that was too much information).

In the end, I am glad I had the surgery. I do not have to live with the wondering of if and when I will get breast cancer and now I will always be there for my kids and family. In March it will be a year from the final surgery and one day the scars will heal.

So why did I tell my story... I just want others out there to know that breast health and breast cancer detection should be taken seriously.

I can almost let out a deep breath now...
Child care for the big one has been arranged and the little one is going for a "meet and greet" at his new preschool... Preschool interview in a casual environment...should be interesting...he is only 3!!

Alex came to work with me today, so I dressed casual...

Jeans-Loft/Shirt-Target/Sweater-Banana Republic/Boots-Williams

These jeans are super soft and stretchy, since they don't dig into my incision, I think they are going to be my go to pair for the few times I wear jeans. I think I like the way they look tucked into boots... though, I am thinking I should have bought them a size smaller, they have stretched out a bit and now I need a belt!

You should see the other guy...that's what I told him to say if anyone asked about his shiner...

Jack likes to get Alex out of bed in the morning...yesterday while trying to help him out of the bed, he inadvertently pushed his face into the foot board. Every time I look at him, I wonder why he has on smeared blue eyeshadow!!

Between worrying about childcare, the husbands new job and my work overload, I am just so tired and ready for the weekend...too bad it won't be very relaxing.

I am saying so what to this week...

-If I am very excited that my husband got a great job, but frustrated that he starts Monday...so I have three days to find child care!

-If i only have two hands...everyone thinks I have at least 50...I wish...

-If Jack did not do his homework last night...he fell asleep at 6 and I did not have the heart or the patience to wake him up...he is in Kindergarten and it was just reading 1 book

-If I hate entertaining...we have family coming over for Alex's birthday/Halloween party Saturday and I am panicking just thinking about it

-If I found the mini candy bars I bought last week for Halloween still in the car...had 3 for breakfast...

-If being a household with of two full time working parents freaks me out!!

-If I have cried everyday this week thinking about the above statements...

The thought process behind this outfit...

I had a new business meeting today, so I wanted to dress conservative. But, it was with a sports facility, so no suits necessary. To stray from basic, I went with the lace skirt topped with a plain tank. I love blazers for meetings since they instantly ad polish and this one is fun with tuxedo vibe with the satin lapels. When the Missoni collection for Target first came out, these wedges were not on my radar. But, when I stopped into Target last week, they were the only Missoni item left and happened to be in my size. Since I returned all the other Missoni items I bought (except the black and white shirt see on this blog) I decided to spring for these pumps. I think they ad a punch to the outfit, but wow, do my feet hurt!

So, this perspective client that we met with today was exactly my age...35...went to my rival high school and graduated the same year as me. But now, at this current point in our lives, we are in such different places. It just made me think...how did I get to where I am now... full-time working mom... living in the suburbs. This was not my plan, but somewhere along the way, I made a decision to veer off in this direction... Too much pondering, my head hurts!

Saturday night was my friend Sarah's bachelorette party...we got a dressed up, had a fancy dinner, enjoyed a drag show, drank too much and danced till our feet thought they might fall off.

Lela Is My Hero

I take my photos every day myself. It has become a lot easier now that I have a remote. I have always be so jealous of those ladies who have their own photographer (friend, boyfriend, husband) their photos just seems so much more natural, effortless and less posed...now I know why. Instead of setting up the camera and tripod, running to a spot, pressing the remote and counting to ten...you just pose... Lately, I have been getting frustrated with my photos, so I asked Lela who shares my office to play photographer. She happily obliged and the rest is history...too bad she is not around every day!

I usually take about 40 photos each day in the morning if I happen to get to work early (almost never), during my lunch break or on my way to the car for the long ride home. It can take me anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on how I am feeling, how comfy my clothes are, how may people walk through the shot (so annoying) or an array of other annoying variables. With Lela taking my photos these last few times it has taken about 10 minutes at the most and I am not so focused on where to look, when to press the remote button, is the wind going to blow over the tripod... I guess what it all comes down to, end the end, is that it just makes my life easier....

Lela...you rock my socks off!! If only she did not have a real job to do everyday. Hmmm...if I could just pay her to take pretty photos of me every day...not going to happen, but I can dream!

On to my garments...love this fuzzy sweater vest! But, besides how I styled it today, I am at a loss for how to wear it. The few times I have worn it, I have styled it just like this, or with a patterned button up shirt and jeans... Any one have any suggestions??

All Aboard...I'm Leaving The Station

So, I am laying in bed last night thinking about what I wanted to wear today...I decided I was going to style myself preppy...

I think this outfit tripped over preppyville on it way to messytown....

I started with tights with tights and my favorite skirt and added this great striped top. I could not find my leopard belt in the mess I like to call my closet, so I left the poor belt loops naked! Then, the train fell off the rails...I was looking for the gold flowered necklace with the same color tones as the top, but in the two whole minutes I had to get dressed, I just could not find it. So, I saw this leopard scarf and knotted it up. I decided on my lighter ankle boots over my darker knee high boots.
This jacket is another story. I think fall jackets are in a box in the attic somewhere, but I am not sure I want to venture up there with all the dust and cobwebs. So, I picked up this sweatshirt/jacket hybrid at Old Navy a few weeks ago. It's not very warm, but it sure is cozy...
Last, but not least, is my new bracelet! If you know me, you know I love a good leaf motif, so when I saw this bracelet at Macy's, I knew it was destined to adorn my wrist!!

It's the effort that counts...right...

Just a bit of the last few days...such a busy week!

Friday...work...starting to feel sick

After spending an hour fighting with customer service at Bank Of America ...the cash machine ate my check and never recorded my deposit...ahhh, I had a craving for Chipotle to sooth my frazzled nerves...

To my delight, Chipolte now has brown rice...woo hoo!!

Saturday... Just rested...so not feeling well... But, I had to run an errand for work, so I popped into Old Navy...big sale! I scored a leopard blouse for $7 and the sweater dress I wore on Sunday...

Sunday...feeling better! Today I had a bridal shower for my friend/trainer Sarah. It has been a few years since I have been to a bridal shower...at my age, it is usually all baby showers and kiddie parties.
Great company, yummy food and amazing red velvet cake...good times!

Then spent my night watching the Bears game with this...

To Thine Own Self Be True...

The voices in my brain are having an internal debate...
Monday I received a back handed compliment that made me think...She who shall not be named said "wow, aren't you just colorful today...so bright". I could tell by the look on her face that she did not mean that in a "you look beautiful, love your outfit kind of way. I did not take any outfit pics, but this is what I wore...grass green full Anthro skirt, Barney purple tank top, brown open weave cardigan light brown ankle books and a scarf leopard print with small orange flowers. After that comment, I was really self conscience about my outfit. So, I have been thinking, should I dress a bit more to disappear into a crowd, or keep my flair with my bright colors and layers of jewelry. I think, when I am feeling loathsome about myself and things, I dress more to fade into the background. But, when I am feeling like myself and feel good in my outfit, I have no problem standing out. So, I guess the voices in my head have to keep reminding me that it is ok for others to be slightly aback by my desire to stand out in a crowd and not fade away.

Monday was not a day I felt like having eyes on me...so I decided to dress "quieter"...

Saturday was Alex's 3rd birthday!

He kept saying that he wanted a big boy seat for his birthday. He insists that he is not a baby and wants a car seat like Jack, a booster. He was so excited when he unwrapped the seats, one for each car, that he insisted I put them together now...he the proceeded to move one in front of the TV and sit in it to watch cartoons to try it out.

His birthday party was Sunday. What started out a a raging disaster...ended in success. Alex had a great time, and in the end that's all that really matters.

I officially have no more babies...no more diapers...no more baby seats...no more cribs...just a
3 year old and a 5 1/2 year old...my big boys!

So, I tried on 36 pairs of pants last weekend...no exaggeration...27 pairs. Guess how many actually came home with me...2...just two damn pairs. I have muscular thighs, smaller hips than the rest of my legs, and and an incision that hates being bound by tight fabric, not to mention being a short 5'4"...not an easy fit! But, these tan trousers and back jeans now reside in my closet...Thank You Loft!! You always come through!!

When I was younger, I was never one of those people who lived for the weekends...to me they were like every other day, I just got to sleep in a bit. But now, as a working parent, I live for the days when I don't have to get myself and the boys up, dressed, fed and out the door before I am fully functioning...
Sleeping late is not a weekend luxury anymore, but I do enjoy lounging around in my pajamas for a few hours while the boys watch cartoons...no where to rush off to. I guess this is a long way of saying thanks Friday for finally being here and please come again next week!

I have never been a fan of high waisted pants or skirts...but I think this skirt has converted me. The waistband of the skirt hitting me higher on the waist accentuates that I might just actually have a waist... ingenious!! Next step...high waisted jeans...must just have to try...! The last few times I have worn this skirt I have styled it up with a black blazer or cardi, but today I thought I would try the mustard yellow/brown zipper cardi...I think the color goes well wit the neutrals in the skirt! I am madly in love with my new necklace from Bauble Bar...#2 from last weeks order...chunky with gold and silver speckles...perfection! I feel great today in this outfit...it is amazing what a high waisted skirt and some new jewels can do for your confidence...that and a good nights sleep and two cups of coffee..!

I am currently coveting leopard loafers...I had a pair about 10 years ago that I wore all the time. Too bad I got rid of them, I guess I will just have to find a new pair. I am also lusting a leather jacket...something to be a top layer that can easily be thrown over everything. The perfect transition from summer to fall is summery dresses with a blazer, tights and boots, or in this case ankle boots...I was a little apprehensive about wearing the dark tights with the lighter boots, but I think I pulled it of quite well! Love this little cargo blazer/jacket...from Old Navy winter 08. I bought it right before I got pregnant with Alex, and wore it throughout the next few months to contain my huge belly. Ah, the memories...I so did not enjoy being pregnant!! This necklace arrived yesterday from Bauble Bar...I love them! All the jewelry comes in a reusable little pouch with a personalized note..My new favorite website...

I like this outfit better in theory...I think maybe because the jacket is a bit too short and baggy in the shoulders... You cannot really see, but the jacket has gold threads running through it. I tried to contrast the stripes in the tank top with the circular necklace. All I can say for this outfit is I tried.

I hope everyone has a great weekend...I plan to finish organizing my closet and pulling out my fall clothes and boxing up the summer stuff. I am also on the hunt for a pair of leopard loafers and I plan to hit up a few stores to see what I can find.

So, Thing 1 and Thing 2 did not sleep last night, so neither did I. After a fitful night sleep, I slept through my alarm and woke to a searing pair down the left side of my body, specifically my back and neck. Then, I slowly tried to do my hair and gave up after a few minutes since lifting my arm was painful. To overcompensate for the state of my hair, I dressed up a bit and threw on my blazer...love the satin lapels!

I cannot wait until the end of the day so I can go home and lay in the bed, flat on my back with a heating pad...

This dress was one of my wardrobe staples this summer, so I was hoping it could transition to fall with the addition of tights and a sweater...I am not sure if it worked. I first tried it with brown flat boots, but since the dress goes just past my knees, it looked funny...so I decided on the brogues. But since the dress is such flimsy cotton, the tights and sweater just seem to heavy... But nothing say comfort like a loose dress and a big slouchy sweater...

On the jewelry front, but new zipper bracelets are from thehippiechicksew via etsy. I was looking for another zipper bracelet since my Jewelmint on broke when my anger got the best of me and I pounded on the table...the poor bracelet did not even see it coming...

So what if...

-I really liked the Missoni for Target collection. I bought a dress, cardigan and a shirt (see below) and I am very excited to style them up.

-I am confused about all the hate for the collection...I know it is pricey for Target and not all natural fibers, but so...

-I thought that when I grew up, all the cattiness would stop bothering me...but guess what, it still does.

-I am so hungry...all I want to do is eat...eat...eat...not a good thing!

-I decided to stop being angry...as I finish typing this post...

I wanted the top to be the focus of this outfit, but not style it with a blank slate. So, I decided to pair it with the lace skirt and add color with this great red cardigan. The rose gold bracelet and thin silver bracelet, next to my watch, are my new Bauble Bar finds...love Bauble Bar. They have so much fun jewelry that won't break the bank. I love to mix metals, so the rose gold is perfect, and the silver one just has a fun industrial feel. My order came in 3 days and there was a personalized thank you note...great customer service goes a long way in my mind.

Wow...that sounded like an advertisement...ha... definitely not... If you know me, you know I love jewelry!

Jack is loving Kindergarten. He was so excited to tell me that Katelyn sits next to him everyday in class because she likes him. I did not have the heart to tell him that she sits next to him because that is her assigned seat.

Alex started pre-school last week and he also loves it. He still likes to invite his imaginary friend over to play.

I love me a good pencil skirt...the shape of the skirt with a pair of heels just makes me feel sexy and strong. Add a dash or leopard and a pop of red, and I am ready to take on the world...or maybe just two strong little boys...ha! This skirt is Halogen brand from Nordstroms and is available in a rainbow of colors. So, I have planned out my schedule for tomorrow to make sure I can stalk the Target by my house right after school drop-off in the morning to get the first pick of Missoni for Target. I also have plans to hit up the Target by my office during lunch to see if there is anything I missed. I am just way to excited for the launch...

Fashion's Night Out

Thursday was a long day...but totally worth the tiredness and coffee necessity I feel today...

For work, I attended a Business of Sports luncheon. I was expecting it to be a bit more formal than it actually turned out to be. It was incredibly fascinating to hear some of Chicago's biggest sportscasters tell stories about how they started out and how the game has changed over time. Also, the had the best dessert...I thought about whipping out my camera and taking a pic, but decided not to be that person! It was a mini cupcake size, with a cookie shell, filled with caramel, topped with chocolate...yum...I had two!

I wanted to wear this new dress that I purchased at Target, but I new I had to tone down the short length and flowyness for work. So, I decided to dig out my tights and my new brow boots that I have been waiting impatiently to wear...love how the boots lace up in the back! Also, I added cream-ish blazer and understated jewelery for some polish.

Then, last night I attended Fashion's Night Out at the Shops of North Bridge...Anne from Cohabitating Closet joined me for the festivities. So much shopping and snacks...a car delivering gourmet cupcakes, peppercorn and parmesan popcorn, Vogues chocolates, Big Bowl spring rolls, alcoholic beverages, sales, fashion shows and many fashionable ladies!

For the night I decided to ditch the tights and boots and style my dress with my favorite ankle boots, dangley earrings and more jewelry.

My favorite part of the night was getting a makeover. I am not really a far of anyone else doing my make-up...I have sensitive skin and it turns red when you even look at it the wrong way...but I thought what they hay, it will be fun!! Since I was throwing caution to the wind, I told the stylist from Smashbox to go all out and style me up with something besides the basic brown shades I always wear. When he whipped out the teal eyeliner I was a bit nervous, but I love, love, love the final product.

I had planned on doing more shopping, working my way down Michigan Avenue to check out Topshop, marking a few more things off my fall lust list, but instead, just hung out, ate too much...all in all, a fun and stylish evening was had by all!

I had a long meeting and lots of work to do today, so I decided to wear the skirt and blazer combo to look professional, but funk it up with a eyelet blazer, bright tank top, and multiple necklaces to add a dash of personality. I am glad the week is only 4 days, but I still have 5 days worth of work to do!

So, tomorrow is Fashion Night Out and I plan to partake in some of the festivities that Chicago has to offer... I have my outfit all laid out and ready to go...a new dress. But, I don't want to have to change after work, so I plan on styling the dress two ways...more business-like and conservative for a conference at work and funky, relaxed, but polished for a night of shopping.

Perfect Weather For An Invisible Friend...

I can finally see the beginnings of fall...68 sunny degrees of perfection today...

This outfit was was designed around my new booties. I had been searching for new brown ankle boots for a while now and I think I found the perfect pair...2 inch heel and incredibly comfortable. I thought they would go well with a pencil skirt...so I decided denim. Added my trusty JCrew gold cardi and a fall scarf and the outfit was complete! Fall weather just makes me so happy...sot cold enough that I need a heavy coat, but cool enough for boots and a scarf...and the perfect cherry on the top is the fact that I am not sweaty!

So, I organized and cleaned out my closet this weekend. I put away most of the sandals and brought out all the boots and tights. I then did an inventory of what I have and more importantly what I need for fall...not as much as I thought. But, with Topshop and Madewell opening in Chicago, I am sure I will have all my fall needs covered...and more.

Signs, Signs, Everywhere Signs...

Besides my basic uniform clothing-wise...in spring/summer, the comfy dress or skirt...fall winter, tights boots, dress or skirt and cardigan or blazer...I have recently noticed that my accessories seem to have a theme...motif. Besides the fact I always wear a statement necklace, a wrist full of bracelets, and at least two or three rings...I keep seeing the same things pop up...

It's A Pants Party...

I wore pants...again...two days in a row is a record for me...but please do not get used to it!

This outfit came together fairly easy this morning. Besides yesterdays pants, these are the only other pants I feel comfortable in..pleated ankle length silk pants I love...never thought I would say that! I bout this jacket over the weekend at Gap. Love it!! Light tweed pattern, pockets, leather trim, zipper...$22...wonderful. It was on sale, then an additional 40% off so it had to be mine!
I feel pretty good in this outfit today...I think that when I am dressed professionally and have on some fun jewelry, I feel my best. It also helps that it is not real hot out, so I am finally comfortable.

So, I asked Jack if I could take his photo when we got to school today. He said yes, as long as I can stand by the Alien and set up my backpack for the photo...ok then!

He insists on wearing a car shirt almost every day...good thing for the laundry we have a dozen of them.

They line up by the doors and wait for the teachers to come out. Jack cannot remember his friends names, but then he introduced me a a little girl today as his new friend and they went off to line up together...so cute!
I definitely think Alex is getting bored. As I was leaving today, he told me is friend was coming over and bringing him some juice...I was confused since he did not have a play date. I discovered he has been telling Jack, my husband and I that every morning his friend is coming over...each day bringing something different. I guess he really does miss Jack and looking for someone new to play with...school can definitely not start soon enough.

It's Monday....again...

Between the sunburn I got Saturday afternoon and the killer arm workout I did Saturday morning, I can barely life my arms above my head. It hurts just to lean over and pick up the phone...

I hate to admit it, but this was the third outfit I tried on today. I was wearing my one of my favorite teal blue Target dresses when I dropped Jack off at school, but even that was the second outfit. Realizing I had not shaved my legs in way to long, I quickly stopped back home on the way to work and threw on this outfit. You know I must be really desperate if I am resorting to the evil pants! You cannot really tell, but the pants have a subtle grey pinstripe and the top is a crinkly gold sheen.

Today was Jack's first full day of Kindergarten. All weekend he kept reminding me that he goes to school all day long and has lunch and a snack. He was so excited to line up and go into his class today that he barely remembered to sat goodbye to me. I cannot wait to hear about his day at school. Now, I need to find an activity for Alex. He starts preschool next week, Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Since his birthday is in October, he just misses the deadline for everything. But, I think I might have just found an art class for him. I am so afraid he is going to be bored without structure everyday...he is used doing something with me, Nana, Jack or a class or something.

Thank you all for allowing me my craptastic Wednesday... It is finally Friday, and I am ready for the weekend! A weekend full of too many things to do, but a weekend none the less.

That just made my week all worth it!

Why Did I Get Out Of Bed Today...

Today is just one of those days when you count down the minutes until it ends so you can go back to sleep and start again tomorrow and forget today existed...but, if there has to be one positive, I really like my outfit!

Lets start with the skirt...picked it up off the Anthropologie sales rack yesterday...score!! love the high waist with the brass snaps, droopy side pockets and fabulous pattern! I was a big fan of the fact that the pattern is both brown and black, so I decided to style it with a black tank and brown knit vest!
So, imagine my surprise when I arrive home yesterday from the gym, there is a box on the table for me...it's my new bracelets from the Chasing Davies Bracelet Swap from Ashley Tiseo. I love that they have a fall vibe..they are knit...so cool!! I have a feeling they are going to be a staple in my arm candy all fall!

Please pardon the puffy eyes...like I mentioned, it has been a rough one...

The Urban Jungle Called Kindergarten!

If you look closely, you will notice the vest is studded...by me. I was inspired by Terra of Stylish White Female to take this basic vest and funk it up! I used stars on the bottom pockets and circular studs on the top. Such a fun and easy DIY!

Today was meet the teacher day for Jack...very exciting. Besides meeting his new teacher, whom I think is wonderful, Jack found his locker, desk and already made a few new friends. Jack is very outgoing and pretty much introduced himself to everyone in the class. Tomorrow is his first real day... He is so excited, me, I am just trying to hold it together...my baby is starting Kindergarten!!!

They Let Me Out Of My Cage...

Saturday I had a full day out. Since there was not much time between my friend's baby shower and the blogger meet up, I decided to take one dress and style it two ways, changing the jewelry and shoes.

First i started with a basic blue dress. I bought it for $11 at the Banana Republic Outlet two years ago. When I first bought it, I couldn't zipper. I was so excited that when I tried it on the other night and it zipped, I did the happy dance around the house...ha!

So, for the baby shower, I decided to try to make the dress more casual by styling it with a fun beaded necklace, leopard cardi, and strappy, low heeled clogs.

Then, I wanted to dress the dress up a bit for the meet up. So, first I ditched the cardi, then I dug out my highest heeled sandals and chunky beads. I bought these sandals about 4 years ago for a party. But after, my feel hurt so bad, I stuck then in the back of my closet never to be worn again...until Saturday. My feet are a bit more adept at wearing heels now, so I dug them out and tried them on...not real comfortable, but they would do.

The baby shower was a lot more fun than I expected. I was so great to see Jennifer and her family. I know she is going to be a wonderful mother...I cannot wait to meet her little baby.

I had such a great day. It was really nice to have a day to myself, no kids, no pressure... But now back to the craziness...I would not have it any other way!

I knew Friday was going to be a busy work day...but with lots of running around and not clients to be seen, I decided to dress casual...

I love my new ring. I always have really been into lucky charms...especially the protection of the evil eye. It is not easy to see, but the boyfriend jeans have a pinstripe, I added a purple snake print belt
and my necklace is a face. I hate to say it, but I wasn't very comfortable most of the day in these jeans, not really sure why I wore them...Just say no to pants!!

I usually try not to fill up my weekend with plans. Working all week, I keep my weekend for relaxing and spending time with the boys. But this weekend, I have a lot of fun things to do. One of my closest friends...she actually lived with my parents after college...it's her baby shower. I am so excited to see her...not real excited to see other people who I have not seen since high school. But whatever...I am proud of who I am now and plan to get all dressed up, go in full of self confidence and have a good time! More excitement Saturday evening...Chicago Blogger Meetup!!! I cannot wait to meet all the other cool Chicago bloggers!!

Now here's the big dilemma...what am I going to wear. There will be no time to go home between the shower and the meetup...hmmm...

All this talk in blog land about back to school outfits and fall clothing made me think about the kinds of outfits I would have picked out for my first day of college...way back in the 90's... Even though it was over 10 years ago, this outfit I wore yesterday is pretty close to what I wore for my first day of class, sophmore year, Ithaca College.

Way too many years ago, my go to outfit was a jean skirt and a striped or patterned t-shirt and strappy sandals...I even had a brown leather messenger bag that I carried everywhere. Back then, I would have never thought to wear stripes with a floral necklace, but I am pretty sure I did have a stack of bracelets on my arm!

It is pretty amazing to me how my core style has stayed the same all these years.

Back in Ithaca, my 19 year old, fun-loving, but incredibly career orientated self would have never fathomed that there would be a 35 year old self, with two kids, reminiscing about what I wore on the first day of school.

I got a pedicure this weekend. I thought I would go with a fall-ish color since I am so ready for the fall weather and fashions!!

I gave myself a manicure...it is amazing how many shades of purple nail polish I have!

I am not sure how I feel about it being Monday already, but no one consulted with me, so I will just have to deal! The fact that it is 75 and sunny makes the beginning of the week that much easier...

I am so ready for fall!! I always loved the end of August...time to buy new fall clothes for school!! I always painstakingly planned my outfit for the first day or school. I wanted to wear some of my new fall purchases, but it was still always too hot, and I was so mad I had to still wear my old summer clothes on the first day. Then, for a long time, I could not mark the passing of the seasons by when school started, since I had to act like a grown up and get a real job...booo! I worked on my fall wardrobe when the weather itself started to change. But, now that I have kids in school, I feel like fall should start next week, right after Jack starts school! I wish mother nature agreed with me, but I have a funny feeling that the weather won't let me pull out my boots, tights and sweaters just yet! Today's weather is perfect to start dreaming about what pieces I need to fill holes in my fall wardrobe...

Wow, that was my first polyvore set... not sure what I did not try it sooner...love it!!

I was feeling kind of sassy today while taking these photos. Maybe it was the bold (for me) lip color, the dangley necklace, clank of the bangles on my arm or maybe the long silhouette evoked by the maxi skirt... Whatever it was, it felt good! I don't usually wear much of a bold lip-color, especially in the summer, but I just felt like amping my look up, and picked up this lip shade at Target. I think I am going to have to wear a colored lip more often, it totally finishes my look!

So, I have two friends that are very pregnant right now...both due within the next month. Talking to them has made me remember back to those two times when I was in the end stages of my pregnancies, wondering how the hell I was going to do it all...babies, house, husband, kids, work...life. I am still not sure how I did it, but here I am... 35, 1 marriage, 2 healthy kids, a house in the suburbs, work full time... surviving it all...
I just want to make sure that I slow down enough to realize how lucky I am to have this life...

I hate to admit it, but not much thought went into today's outfit. I wanted something simple, and this dress fit the bill. I love that I can wear a shirt dress...first.time.ever...with out the buttons pulling...ahhh!!

Just added a bright necklace and my highest heeled sandals and out the door...

Not much else going on here in my corner or the blogosphere...work is busy, boys are their silly boy selves...Making time for one and all is not easy, but life goes on.

I must remember this is not a competition!

Sibling Rivalry and Love...

I never had a sibling, so the sibling dynamic is just so fascinating to me. Alex has to do whatever his big brother Jack is doing, and vice verse...always. One minute they are yelling and fighting with each other over toys, then the next minute they are hugging and kissing each other. At the playground the other day, some kid stole the swing from Jack and he ran over to me crying...so Alex went up to the kid and pushed him...I love that he defended Jack. Then five minutes later my boys were fighting over a car...ha!!

So, when it is time to walk my mother's dog, Suzy (they named her) they both have to put their own leash on her and walk her together. It is such a mess...Jack walking one way and Alex pulling another...poor Suzy!

Two weeks until Jack starts Kindergarten...ahhhh!!!

It's time for Everybody, Everywear...and everybody is doing it!!

Before I started blogging, I would have never mixed patterns...I would have always styled these

pin striped pants with a solid top. But, thanks to all you bloggers, readers and commenter's, I have fallen in love with mixing it up! I had planned on wearing a striped skirt today, but I could not find it in the mess I call my closet. Then I saw these pants on the hanger and thought I would throw caution to the wind and see if I could wear them without cringing...and I did. Not sure how or why they actually fit, but I am just going with it! This lace t-shirt from Loft is one of my items from my retail therapy spree. It is a basic great t-shirt with lace sewn on the front. I have the winter version of this shirt also with long sleeves and stripes...it is one of my favorites and I am pretty sure this short sleeved one with become a long lived closet staple.

This shirt is one of the results of my retail therapy session on Friday. I love the anything floral! I am still amazed that a t-shirt like this fits... This time last year, before the surgery, I could never wear v-neck t-shirts, or most t-shirts. If I bought them big enough to fit my boobs, the were too big in the waist. I am just so enamored by the fact that I can wear all kinds of shirts now...I purchased 4 on Friday...Gap, Loft and Zara...cannot wait to style them up!! These Michael Kors clogs I am wearing were found when I decided to actually open up the boxes of summer clothes still in storage...very important since the summer is 3/4 way over....oops...new to me!!

I had a pretty relaxing weekend... On Saturday, I had a great workout and ran errands...very productive. On Sunday, I spent the whole day in my pajamas...watching my DVR backlog of Falling Skies and House Hunters, paying bills and DIY-ing tons of bracelets.

So far so good for Monday...
